In the heart of affluent Putnam County, financial struggles persist, as evidenced by the weekly assistance provided by St. John’s Church Food Pantry to nearly 450 individuals. This vital community resource operates seamlessly through a dedicated team of volunteers who ensure that essential items are distributed efficiently. Every week, these selfless individuals, predominantly senior citizens, diligently prepare bags filled with non-perishable goods while others handle fresh produce and dairy products arriving early in the morning.
The backbone of this operation is its remarkable team of 51 volunteers, led by Edward Welch, whose pride in their all-volunteer model is palpable. Their efforts include managing deliveries from the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York, where they unload monthly shipments under the pre-dawn sky. Recently, volunteers from Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New York joined them for a day of service, contributing to the weekly distribution program. The church's pastor, Father Szymon Kurpios, expressed heartfelt gratitude for their collaboration, emphasizing the joy brought by such acts of solidarity.
Acts of faith and service continue to inspire the local community. Next Friday, a group of Hispanic parishioners will engage in a meaningful procession through Mahopac’s streets, commemorating the Stations of the Cross. Additionally, Cardinal Timothy Michael Dolan is scheduled to visit the church the following Saturday at 11 a.m., bringing a special blessing to the food distributed. Such events highlight the enduring strength and compassion found within communities when people unite for a common cause, proving that collective effort can overcome adversity and foster hope.
